Babel Babel: a Mediterranean food-art

A new resto-bar in Nice is up to set a benchmark. Time to meet Babel Babel

To be honest, we get a little tired of so-called restaurants that take a fortune for mediocre dishes. It makes us feel someone is doing you a favor just because of a nice location by the beach.
Now, at last, a new place came to change this impression.
Meet Babel Babel: a Mediterranean-inspired kitchen and bar in Nice.

Perfectly located right on the Promenade des Anglais, Babel Babel is bringing a refreshing attitude of lounge and cuisine in a way we haven’t seen in a while. The good impression starts just from looking at the menu that is full of intriguing dishes and ideas. The place looks nice, too.

The food

Welcomed by the kind servers, we opened our visit with 2 glasses of wine, and 3 dishes. Kefta, Tagliatelle pasta with oysters and grilled eggplant served with tahini and poached egg were our choices.
The pasta was a generous meal, with good tastes and balance between the aroma of the oysters and the vegetables.

We were even more impressed with the kefta, that was served with a decorative sauce and seeds.
It seems like a simple dish, but in fact it is a big challenge to master: if it is prepared badly – there’s nothing to make up for it.
Luckily, it turned out to be soft, full of taste, fresh and beautifully plated.

Just when we thought it couldn’t possibly compare to the mighty Kefta, we tasted the grilled eggplant – and it was a revelation.
Usually, this dish comes without the egg as an entry, but the upgrade here is brilliant and makes it a main course.
Something about the texture grade of the 3 ingredients (liquid, squishy and solid) does magic. The taste of fire from the grilled eggplant with the the egg and tehina suited together as if they were created for each other.

For dessert we took “Soufganiot” (Jewish doughnut), which was really cute and tasty, filled with a great caramel cream.

This visit left us with a full stomach and hope that maybe one day we will see more places as committed as this will open near the beach or even elsewhere.
