5 Foods that are unique to Nice

Nice has its own interpretation when it comes to food

One of the best ways to discover a city is by walking inside it – but it is also through its local food. Often, the dishes represent the atmosphere, the people and landscapes through the taste and looks.

Today, we are going on the second option, which is discovering the dishes made-in-Nice; Some of which are world-famous. Here is our list for you to discover:

Socca

Socca is a form of pancake, made from chickpeas that give it its salty taste.
Looking like some sort of Crepe, texture is special and taste is unique.
A good Socca would be a bit humid and fairly easy to swallow.
Variations of Socca exist in other countries such as Italy and Argentina.

Pissaladière

Pissaladière resembles pizza in its looks, but in this case the base is bread dough – which is thicker than pizza.
Comparing to pizza, it doesn’t contain cheese; Instead, caramelized onions, olives and anchovies are in use.

Pan Bagnat

It may look like an ordinary sandwich, but Pan Bagnat has strict rules regarding its preparation.
The bread has to be made of whole wheat, containing hard boiled eggs, tuna, olive oil, salt, and pepper (never mayonnaise). The only choice here is the additional raw vegetables, but it will be tomatoes 99% of the time.

Daube

Daube is a Provence-style beef stew, containing vegetables such as carrots and potatoes, and wine.
It resembles a lot a beef Bourguignon, but in Nice Daube is often served with Ravioli and Gnocchis and has more Mediterranean touches to it.
You can find this dish in New Orleans in the form of jellied stew under the name Daube glacé.

Salad Niçoise

In its traditional form, this salad is made from Tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, Niçoise olives and tuna, and is dressed with olive oil.
Try to find a version of this salad with raw red tuna rather than one from a can – it changes the whole experience.
Since the 20th century, the salad Niçois is being admired by notorious chefs around the world. We totally agree with what Gordon Ramsay says about it: “it must be the finest summer salad of all.”
